Dental Sealants

Preventive

A dental sealant falls under the preventative dentistry category, as sealants protect the enamel on your teeth if your dentist thinks you may need additional protection from things that could lead to decay, like sugary/acidic substances and bacteria. A sealant is a clear coating that is applies to the surface of your molars, and it will prevent any food debris or plaque from resting in the small grooves that your molars have. Sealants are typically recommended to children who are still learning how to take care of their teeth, but they have benefits for all ages. Sometimes your toothbrush doesn’t reach into all the small crevices your molars have, so there’s always the benefit of having additional protection from developing cavities and decay.

Quick and Painless

The process of getting dental sealants is quick and painless, as your hygienist will paint the sealant onto your enamel after cleaning your teeth. Sealants will last for several years before needing to be reapplied but visiting your dentist regularly can determine their condition and their effectiveness. It’s also important to remember that sealants aren’t an alternative to good hygiene habits, you still need to brush and floss your teeth regularly. They’re great at preventing tooth decay, but good oral hygiene is still necessary.
